The Semiprimitivity Problem for Twisted Group Algebras of Locally Finite Groups

Let K[G] be the group algebra of a locally finite group G over a field K of characteristic p > 0. In this paper, we show that K[G] is semiprimitive if and only if G has no locally subnormal subgroup of order divisible by p. Thus we settle the semiprimitivity problem for such group algebras by verifying a conjecture which dates back to the middle 1970’s. Of course, if G has a locally subnormal s...

Semiprimitivity of Group Algebras: a Survey

Let K be a field and let G be a multiplicative group. The group ring K[G] is an easily defined, rather attractive algebraic object. As the name implies, its study is a meeting place for two essentially different algebraic disciplines. Indeed, group ring results frequently require a blend of group theoretic and ring theoretic techniques. A natural, but surprisingly elusive, group ring problem co...

Group Algebras of Finite Groups as Lie Algebras

We consider the natural Lie algebra structure on the (associative) group algebra of a finite group G, and show that the Lie subalgebras associated to natural involutive antiautomorphisms of this group algebra are reductive ones. We give a decomposition in simple factors of these Lie algebras, in terms of the ordinary representations of G. MSC 2000 : 20C15,17B99.

amenability of banach algebras

chapters 1 and 2 establish the basic theory of amenability of topological groups and amenability of banach algebras. also we prove that. if g is a topological group, then r (wluc (g)) (resp. r (luc (g))) if and only if there exists a mean m on wluc (g) (resp. luc (g)) such that for every wluc (g) (resp. every luc (g)) and every element d of a dense subset d od g, m (r)m (f) holds. chapter 3 inv...

Complex Group Algebras of Finite Groups : Brauer ’ S Problem 1

Brauer’s Problem 1 asks the following: what are the possible complex group algebras of finite groups? It seems that with the present knowledge of representation theory it is not possible to settle this question. The goal of this paper is to announce a partial solution to this problem. We conjecture that if the complex group algebra of a finite group does not have more than a fixed number m of i...
